Zuni carver, Marvelita Phillips, carved this scenic piece of an owl standing on a log with two smaller birds, and a hole in the log with blue eggs inside. How sweet! The owl and log are carved from antler, and the owl has inlaid turquoise eyes. The brown bird is carved from Picasso marble, and the black and white bird is carved from orthoceras. The eggs are turquoise.

Birds are seen as messengers between this world and the spirit world.
Owls are birds of the night who fly silently with excellent vision. They are predators who hunt at night and sleep during the day. They, as are most raptors, communicate between this world and the next.
Traditionally, Zuni carvings are symbolically fed cornmeal. Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.
