Spiny oyster shells used in Native American jewelry are indigenous to the Sea of Cortez and, there is another purple shell that comes from the coast of Ecuador.  The spiny oyster shell that was used for decades came from the Sea of Cortez.  About ten years or so ago, the Mexican government created a marine protected zone which was a good thing, but it dramatically reduced the amount of spiny shell for use in jewelry.  The lighter color spiny oyster, yellowish to orange, live in shallower sea levels than the purple ones, making purple spiny oyster more precious.

There is another purple spiny oyster that I've been told comes from the coast of Ecuador.  This spiny oyster has bits of yellow in it.
