Zuni carver, Gabe Sice, carved this exquisite corn maiden from deer antler.  She has a red coral dot inlaid on her tablita, finely carved bangs, and a sweet face with inlaid jet eyes, and a red coral mouth.  She has an inlaid turquoise dot at her neck.  The center of her dress has a star engraved near the bottom, with an inlaid turquoise dot.  Her shawl has four inlaid jet lines one each side with a coral dot in the center.  The rim of her skirt has a pattern of inlaid jet lines and coral dots around the bottom.  Her hair is delicately engraved and flows down the center of her back.  There are two inlaid dots at the bottom in the back of her shawl.  So beautifully done.

Size: 2" H x .625" in diameter

Corn maidens represent everything good about being a woman: strong, kind, compassionate, nurturing, and powerful.  There are many Indigenous stories about how corn was brought to the people at a time when there was hunger, and how a sacred, sometimes other worldly, female being brought them corn.  Corn maidens come with a card detailing the meaning, the carver, and the material they are carved from.

Traditionally, Zuni carvings are symbolically fed cornmeal.   Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.
