Friendly Marble Bat in Flight

Clive Hustito carved this friendly marble bat who looks like it is looking for a snack.  It has inlaid turquoise eyes, large ears (of course!), and detailed wings/arms.    The detailing continues on the underside as you can see in the photo.  More about bats below.

Bats are one of the very few mammals that fly, and the only mammal that has actual wings.  It is a creature of the night, with most of them eating mosquitoes and other insects, although some are also pollinators that consume nector, and a few of them drink blood.  They live communally, sleeping together in caves and attics and other safe places.  They have an excellent sense of direction and use their voices as sonar in the night.  Utterly amazing creatures!

Traditionally, Zuni carvings are symbolically fed cornmeal.   Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.
