Wise Old Owl

My mom had a plaque on her wall with a drawing of an owl on it and these words, "Wise old owl lived in an oak.  The more he saw, the less he spoke.  The less he spoke, the more we heard.  Why can't we be like that wise old bird?"  That's the first think I though when I saw this serpentine owl by Derrick Kaamasee.  As with all of his carvings, this one has impeccable details.  The face, feathers, claws, and base are all well defined.  The eyes are inlaid turquoise.  More about owls below.

Owls are birds of the night who fly silently with excellent vision.  They are predators who hunt at night and sleep during the day. They, as do most raptors, communicate between this world and the next. 

Traditionally, Zuni carvings are symbolically fed cornmeal.   Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.
