With turquoise and jet bands to indicate the blues and blacks of blue jays, this bird is carved from Zuni travertine and has turquoise eyes. It's a bit rough and we reduced the price from $39, but we love it anyway!

Blue jays are clever, curious, mischievous and can be very loud. They aren't easily tricked. As a little girl camping with my family, I tried to catch one. When my father saw me with a box, some string and a stick, he asked what I was doing. When I told him I was going to catch a blue jay, he laughed and said it wouldn't happen. Well, I sat there quietly holding on to the string attached to the stick, holding up the box. I don't remember how long it took, but I did capture that blue jay. He didn't like it one bit, but he did appreciate the cracker that was under the box!
Traditionally, Zuni carvings are symbolically fed cornmeal. Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.
