Brave Buffalo

Cody Nastacio carved this brave buffalo from cedar and inlaid turquoise eyes with jet pupils.  Everything about this buffalo is strong, from the look on its face to how it stands.  The face and fur on its face and shoulders down to the hooves are well detailed.  Even the tail is detailed!  "CN" and "Zuni" are carved into the bottom of the hooves.  More about buffalos below.

Buffalo, or American bison, roamed the plains in the millions from Northern Mexico into Canada before colonization.  Buffalo are sacred to many Native American people.  They provided so much the people needed: food, clothing, leather to line tipis and make parfleches which are beautifully painted rawhide containers, tools, and so much more.  There has been success in recent years to bring the buffalo back to the plains, especially to Native American tribes on the plains.
