Jewelry makers from the southwest have been trading for people along the Sea of Cortez for spiny oyster shell. Especially prized were the red shells which can be seen in photos of ancient jewelry from the Southwest, especially the Kewa Pueblo. These days, spiny oyster shell is used from the Sea of Cortez and the coast of Ecuador. The Mexican government created a marine sanctuary in the Sea of Cortez to protect marine life from over-fishing, which has led to less of the shells coming from there.
