The medicine wheel is a Native American teaching common in many tribes. The animals may change from tribe to tribe, but the teachings of the energy and spiritual qualities of the directions is very consistent. Above is where the Creator is, below is Mother Earth and the gifts she offers, east is new beginnings and childhood, south is making a way in the world and adulthood, west is elderhood and contemplation, north is spirits and wisdom. Of course there is much more to the teachings than this tiny thumbnail sketch. And, when a person is profoundly balanced, the world can be feel chaotic to others, but the balanced person is in the center of every direction, calm, balanced, and harmonious.
