This buffalo carved from Picasso marble by Todd Etsate looks like it is gazing off into the distance wondering what is happening over there. Maybe it heard something in the distance and is wondering if it needs to alert the herd? At any rate, it is a strong buffalo with turquoise horns and inlaid turquoise eyes. The fur around the head and shoulders is detailed, and the hooves are very well carved. It feels very good in the hand.

Buffalo, or American bison, roamed the plains in the millions from Northern Mexico into Canada before colonization. Buffalo are sacred to many Native American people. They provided so much the people needed: food, clothing, leather to line tipis and make parfleches which are beautifully painted rawhide containers, tools, and so much more. There has been success in recent years to bring the buffalo back to the plains, especially to Native American tribes on the plains.
