Sunshine Badger

Ronnie Lunasee carved this Sunshine Badger from very pale green onyx that is translucent.  As you can see, it glows in the sunlight!  The difference between the photos taken outside in the sun and the photos in the studio are so different.  The eyes are bright blue turquoise and the face, fur, and feet are all beautifully detailed.  More about badgers below.

In the Zuni tradition badgers are the guardians of the south which is associated with new beginnings and childhood.  Badgers are diligent and fierce; you would not want to mess with one!  They are creatures of both the world underground where their dens are, and the world on Mother Earth’s belly where they hunt.  

Traditionally, Zuni carvings are symbolically fed cornmeal.   Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.
