This Navajo bear necklace comes from a collection of older Native American jewelry.  We think they it was made in the 1970s or 1980s.  The face of the sterling silver bear is detailed and it has an arrow cut out on the back flank.  Nice stamp work is on the legs, and two detailed feathers dangle from them.  The intricate channel inlay includes turquoise, sugilite, red coral, spiny oyster shell, lapis, jet, malachite, and Mother of Pearl - more about channel inlay below.  The inlay in each arrowhead matches its partner on the other side.  Each sterling silver bead is handmade, and they end with a silver cone and hook and eye clasp.  It has been lightly polished to maintain the patina that comes with age.

Size: 24" Long - Bear without feathers 2.25 H x 2.5" W - Feathers 1.5" L - Arrowheads 1.25" L x .5" W

Channel inlay jewelry is a process used extensively by Native American jewelers, particularly those in Zuni Pueblo.  Many other talented jewelers from other tribes in the Southwest also make channel inlay jewelry.  The metal channel, usually silver, is soldered onto the back to create the design.  Afterward, the stones are cut to fit into each section.  It is an exacting process which shows in the beauty of the work of the finished piece(s).
