Regular price $220.00 Save $-220.00This fearless Warrior Maiden was carved by Claudia Peina. She holds a sterling silver shield and spear. Half of her hair is in the traditional bun that Pueblo maidens wore and the other half is the long hair of warriors. She has an inlaid red coral mouth and turquoise, jet, and red coral dots inlaid within the geometric designs on her clothing. A turquoise dot is on the side of her moccasins. She is tiny and mighty!

In Zuni and other Pueblos there are stories about a time when the people were being attacked. When the battle was not going well for the people a A young woman picked up a shield and spear and joined the battle. She was powerful and successful in battle and helped protect her people. She is known by the traditional bun that young Pueblo women wear and the long hair of a warrior. She is remembered through the ages for her courage, fearlessness, and bravery.
Traditionally, Zuni carvings are symbolically fed cornmeal. Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.

Regular price $144.00 Save $-144.00This smiling bear was made from turquoise with jet eyes and smile by Zuni carver, Claudia Peina. She inlaid six red coral stones on the body and jet claws. Just because this bear is smiling doesn't mean it isn't powerful. A sterling silver bale is on top of its head to be worn or hung. More about bears below.

Bears are the guardians of the western gate in Zuni Pueblo. They are associated with healing at all levels, protection, and a reminder to restore oneself during the winter months. In some traditions a part of the bear is rubbed all over infants to imbue them with power, strength, and good health.
