Blue Sky Buffalo

This Blue Sky Buffalo was made by Zuni carver Kevin Quam  from lemon serpentine.  The bright turquoise is the color of the summer sky in the horns, eyes, and heartline.  It is small but mighty!  More about buffalo below.

Buffalo, or American bison, roamed the plains in the millions from Northern Mexico into Canada before colonization.  Buffalo are sacred to many Native American people.  They provided so much the people needed: food, clothing, leather to line tipis and make parfleches which are beautifully painted rawhide containers, tools, and so much more.  There has been success in recent years to bring the buffalo back to the plains, especially to Native American tribes on the plains.

Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.
