Compelling Badger

This Bold Badger was carved by Alex Tsethlikai from Zuni Pueblo from Picasso marble with inlaid turquoise eyes.  The face, paws, back stripe, and tail are all well detailed.  The offering bundle is a jet arrowhead with turquoise, heishi, and coral beads.  More about badgers below.

In the Zuni tradition badgers are the guardians of the south which is associated with new beginnings.  Badgers are diligent and fierce; you would not want to mess with one!  They are creatures of both the world underground where their dens are, and the world on Mother Earth’s belly where they live during the day to hunt. 

While we never imagined a badger and coyote hanging out and being friends in the wild, we have so enjoyed the social media videos on nature cams where they are patient and playful with one another!

Traditionally, Zuni carvings are symbolically fed cornmeal.   Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.
