Day Dreaming Little Bear

We read recently that bears will stare off into the distance looking at a beautiful scene or sunset. This Day Dreaming Little Bear looks like it is captivated by something beautiful as its mind meanders. Delvin Leekya carved it from Picasso marble and spent the time to give it a high polish. It has turquoise eyes and two arrowheads on its bundle, one of gold lip mother of pearl and the other of turquoise. It has pink mussel shell on the bottom of its feet. More about bears below.

Bears are the guardians of the western gate in Zuni Pueblo.  They are associated with healing at all levels, protection, and a reminder to restore oneself during the winter months.  In some traditions a part of the bear is rubbed all over infants to imbue them with power, strength, and good health.

Traditionally, Zuni carvings are symbolically fed cornmeal.   Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.
