Big Mama and Baby Bison

Zuni carver, Kevin Quam, carved this Big Mama and Baby bison from Mexican onyx. The eyes and baby's horns are Sleeping Beauty turquoise. Big Mama's horns are jet. Details include the mane around the shoulders and head,  hooves, and face. The offering bundle is a mother-of-pearl arrowhead.

Buffalo, or American bison, roamed the plains in the millions from Northern Mexico into Canada before colonization.  Buffalo are sacred to many Native American people.  They provided so much the people needed: food, clothing, leather to line tipis and make parfleches which are beautifully painted rawhide containers, tools, and so much more.  There has been success in recent years to bring the buffalo back to the plains, especially to Native American tribes on the plains.
